A Sweet Story

I woke up this morning and was greeted by frosty fields and a cloudless sky. The sun was a bright as any other day during the summer and I was instantly put into a good mood. Today also happens to be Valentine’s day, a day in which people pull their significant others closer and those without a special someone can enjoy a pint of ice cream without the guilt. I’ve always loved Valentine’s Day for the chocolate, abundance of my favorite color, pink, and telling my friends how much I love them without it being too weird. Today was not unlike any other Valentine’s day. Usually at home, I wear the pinkest shirt I can find and accessorize with hearts and the like, but because of my limited wardrobe in Sweden, I had to settle with a grey sweater and simply a pink hair tie. I biked to school in the sun, which always manages to boost my mood, and was greeted by my smiling classmates and heart shaped balloons in each classroom. We all told each other what our plans were for the day and everyone seemed to be doing something special in one way or another. After catching up we headed to the first class of the day, English. English is my easiest class, for obvious reasons, but I still enjoy going. Today, we were told to write our very own fairy tales with a partner. We were given forty-five minutes and a list of phrases that had to be included in the story. Other than the phrases, we were allowed to make our stories about anything. One group did theirs on our English teacher’s morning, while my partner and I decided to make up a story about a princess named Vanilla Grace. In honor of Valentine’s Day and just because we had blast writing this, I have decided to share our short story with you.

A Valentine Princess

Once upon a time, there was a grand city located on Banana Split Bay, called Sugar City. The gummy citizens of Sugar City had planned a celebration for Valentine’s Day, which also happened to be the Gummy Princess Vanilla Grace’s birthday. On the big night, Vanilla Grace donned her edible, rainbow dress and prepared to meet her citizens. Despite almost everything being perfect, a problem arose. A big problem. Princess Vanilla Grace hadn’t eaten all day. Between making last minute party alterations and decor, there was simply no time to sit down for her favorite treat, a Swedish fika, which had been her favorite since childhood. When she was just a child, the king of Sweden paid Sugar City a visit, and shared the wonders of the Swedish fika. Every since that day, she had enjoyed three daily, but today, she had none! With nothing to eat in the entire castle, there was no other solution for Vanilla Grace, but to eat her very own party dress. She ran to the deepest, darkest, corner of the castle, the toffee tombs, where her late Grandmother Coco had been buried earlier that year. Just like her late grandmother, Vanilla Grace had a massive sweet tooth. Vanilla Grace often visited the toffee tombs to seek guidance from Grandmother Coco and she knew that the spirit of her Grandmother would understand the difficulties of missing a fika. “Oh Grandmother, I hope you understand that I need to eat my dress,” she explained to the caramel replica of Grandmother Coco’s favorite treat from when she was alive, a cinnamon bun. “I am oh so hungry, and my dress smells like butter frosting. I don’t know what to do!” she exclaimed. Surprisingly, Vanilla Grace heard a voice reply. It was her Grandma Coco’s ghost. “Oh deary, your dress is actually made from an old family recipe. Taste the rainbow, and enjoy it, love. No member of our family should ever go hungry.” Relieved, Princess Vanilla Grace tore off a large swath of her dress and devoured it, only leaving the top, and the fluffy underskirt made of marshmallow that ended right above her knees. Just then Princess Vanilla Grace realized that she only had five minutes left until she had to meet her citizens. “Oh fudgsickles! I’m not hungry anymore, but at what cost? My dress is ruined, and I have no time to fix it!” She decided that her duties as princess were simply more important than the state of her dress and thought to herself, screw it, said goodbye to her grandmother's ghost and raced to the front gates. While running past the crystalized sugar throne room, the princess skidded to a halt when she saw her reflection in a tall pillar of melted sugar. She realized that her new dress was actually super sweet! “Wow, I love this new style, but I don’t know how my citizens will react.” For many years, the style in Sugar City had consisted of long jumpsuits and dresses made of black liquorice. No one really liked the style because it was constricting and uncomfortable, but the gummy citizens of Sugar City were too shy to ever try to change the style. They all secretly thought that if they tried to change the fashion, everyone else would judge them for standing out. In the great Sugar City, this was one of the few problems that the people faced. Princess Vanilla Grace knew that the citizens would think it very strange of her to be wearing something new, and unique, but she had no choice and could only hope that they liked her half-eaten marshmallow dress just as much as she did. Nervous, the princess scurried to the front gates of her palace to greet her guests. She took a deep breath and threw open the heavy chocolate gates. The citizens gasped! They had never seen such a scandalous, yet classy style. The courtyard was silent except for the pink and red streamers rustling in the wind. A few more moments passed and the princess became nervous. A few more silent seconds gave the princess time to make a decision. There was only one thing for her to do. With one hand on her waist and the other in the air, waving the familiar royal wave, she strutted down the stairs through the crowd towards her thrown. The silence was broken and like an explosion, the citizens of Sugar City all started clapping, cheering and singing for their princess. Only a true ruler would have the courage to do what she had just done. Everyone loved the style so much that they too started tearing their own garments to mimic her style. Thus started a new clothing revolution. The Valentine’s celebration was a total success and after the party, all of the black liquorice in the kingdom was thrown away to never be used, or eaten again. Princess Vanilla Grace went on to be one of the best rulers in centuries and every year, Valentine'sDay was a day of love, celebration, and remembrance for the princess who saved Sugar City from uncomfortable clothing, and black licorice forever. Vanilla Grace, her Grandma Coco, the King of Sweden, and all of the gummy citizens of Sugar City all lived happily ever after.
